HOW TO CHOOSE CERAMIC TILES - IDEAS AND FACTS FOR CHOOSING TILES

CERAMIC BEAUTY FROM AMONG THE SAMPLES OF "PLAADIPUNKT COLLECTION"

Ceramic tiles are a beautiful and durable decoration material that is easy to care for. Due their good characterististics, the tiles are above all suited to all washrooms, but are made more and more use of in storm porches, entrance halls, kitchens, rooms with a fireplace, and there are suitable tiles available for rooms intended for various sports and leisure activities.

For a successful tiling one should follow the colour scheme and style of decoration of the whole home. The spatial capacity (ruumivõimalus), size of the family, individual needs and favourite colours of the people should be the starting point for planning tiling. It is advisable to find a ‘red thread', a common feature (coloured surface, form, style) to make the tiles blend with to form a stylish whole from room to room.

One should take his/her time while choosing tiles. Our sales display includes all samples, we start by making the most relevant choices and one should reserve 2-3 hours for experimentation and comparisons. Together we are sure to find an individual solution suited to your needs.

The saying that a good planning takes you a long way holds true also for choosing tiles. One should take note of the following:

WASHROOMS and WC

  • One can use as wall tiles all commercially available tiles from small mosaics up to large tiles (33 X 66).
  • The success of tiling is determined, in addition to one's individual taste, by the height of the room, location of windows and doors, placement of furniture, bath and sinks.
  • In case tiles of two colours are used on walls, the right height for a bordure lies between the furniture or above the border to ensure a free run.
  • A few single graphic tiles yield a better result if placed on a free wall and no bordure is used.
  • A monochrome scheme can be livened by placing angles of 45° or diagonals on it, or by drowning mirrors into tiles or by framing them with suitable decorations.
  • We recommend to bear in mind that light refraction is different on a glossy and on a matte surface.
  • The choice of colours is, above all, a matter of taste. A daring use of different elements yields original results, but when aiming for a timeless scheme, it would be wise to opt for tiles in light and clear colours.
  • The choice of floor tiles is determined by the tile size since the water outlet in the room calls for a floor slope to allow water to drain and not to remain on the surface of the floor.
  • Rectangular mosaics and tiles allow to create only chessboards, diagonals, colour lines and murals.
  • To minimize the risk of sliding, a surface must be sufficiently rough. But here one needs to bear in mind that the rougher the tile, the harder it is to keep it clean.

OTHER ROOMS

  • Large floor tiles liven up and bring a fresh breath of air also to Estonian interiors.
  • Use of floor heating ensures a warm floor surface also in winter.
  • Antique surfaces, the so-called rustic tiles, monochrome and clean or polished tiles look good with various furniture and decoration solutions.
  • A stylish mural made of tiles in a storm porch, entrance hall, on the floor of the dining-room, in front of a fire-place or a decorative strip running along a wall are timeless details of interior decoration that add cosiness and comfort.
  • Apt tiles of the kitchen floor match the colour of kitchen cupboards and the material of the table surface, accentuating also the cosiness and style of the kitchen.
  • Many tile lines offer one and the same tiles in various sizes, allowing, for example, to cover the area between the kitchen floor and the cupboards with tiles of different size or to use different colour schemes.

IMPORTANT

  • The selection of tiles should be made 4-5 weeks before starting the tiling works. The delivery period of the tiles you fancy may be just as long as that.
  • The choice of tiles determines also the choice of the joint colour.
  • The right joint accentuates the appearance of the tiles and ensures a polished result.
  • We recommend to use with the floor tiles of a washroom a darker joint than on the walls because it is easier to keep it clean.
  • The joint colour of large floor tiles provides a contrast to the entire floor surface.
